As a photographer, it’s always rewarding when a client chooses to hire you again! It’s a sign that they loved the experience of working with you and that they loved the imagery you delivered.
And while it’s no less flattering when a brand photography client chooses to work with you again, it does demand a bit more creative thinking than other photography niches!
Here’s the central question that brand photographers must consider when serving returning brand photography clients: How can I create new content for this brand that looks different enough from their last session, but is still cohesive for their brand as a whole?
Brand photography is unique because it’s important that you as a photographer stay true to a brand’s color scheme or aesthetic while providing fresh, current images.
Here are five of my favorite go-to tricks to create content for repeat brand clients:
- Choose a different location. If you photographed a brand client on-site at their place of business for their last brand session, perhaps this time, you shoot outdoors, inside a spec house or model home, or in a neutral studio setting. This isn’t always possible, so if an alternate location isn’t in the cards, try to incorporate different backdrops, furniture sets, or backgrounds.
- Choose different (but still on-brand) outfits. Encourage your repeat client to select new outfit choices for subsequent brand sessions with you. Whether your client rents items in their brand colors from a service like Rent the Runway or Nuuly, or they simply bring different outfit choices than they wore during the last session, changing things up outfit-wise makes a huge difference in showing variety.
- Choose different (but still on-brand) props. If your client is a coffee drinker, they can select a different mug than the one they brought last time. The same truth applies to journals, books, pens, and other props!
- Choose different (but still on-brand) poses. Study your client’s previous gallery, and make notes of poses you’ve already photographed. You don’t necessarily need to avoid these poses – just be aware that you may only need 1-2 shots in that pose to maintain a diverse gallery!
- Challenge yourself to be creative! It’s honestly SO much fun to dive even deeper into a client’s brand and figure out different ways to tell their story with confidence! Clients who trust us again and again deserve a creative thinker by their side (and behind the camera), so don’t be afraid to stretch yourself creatively in order to serve them well.
Here is an example of a client (who is also now a DEAR friend) who has hired me SO many times over the last 4 years I have lost count!
